The Writer
I · Office
Ashok Kumar Sinha holds the chair of Additional Director at the Bihar Museum in Patna — an institution he has helped, patiently, to find its voice. Before that, he directed the Upendra Maharathi Institute for traditional craft, and led Bihar’s Khadi & Village Industries Board.
II · Letters
His work has always moved in two directions at once — upward into literature and sideways into the quiet economies of the handmade. Forty published books trace one track: novels, poetry, criticism and a steady practice of biography. Eleven of those are lives of modern figures; ten are devoted to art and culture.
III · The Other Track
The other track is harder to render on paper — decades of conversation with painters, potters, weavers and singers from the Gangetic plain and beyond; a conviction that the artisan belongs at the centre of any serious idea of India, and not at its periphery.
“परम्पराओं को सामर्थ्य देकर ही भविष्य को प्रेरणा दी जा सकती है।”
— from the opening note, Pitā
